Welcome to Our Dogs Page!
The Poodle is a breed of dog, and is regarded as one of the most intelligent breeds of dog. Originally bred as a type of water dog, the poodle is skillful in many dog sports, including agility, obedience, tracking, and even herding. They are descendants of continental water dogs known in Germany, dating back to the 1500s. It was popular with the French aristocracy, becoming the national dog of France. Even today, one hears the name French Poodle. The traditional trim had practical reasons, leaving the hair long to protect the heart and chest from cold water, and clipping the legs decreased drag while swimming.
Poodles come in three sizes and many colors, but are considered one breed, the Toy being the smallest. Colors include black, blue, brown, apricot, silver and white. It is friendly, active, intelligent, and clownish, a superb companion enjoying the pampered life. An excellent watchdog when needed, but not given to senseless barking. A Toy Poodle puppy is highly trainable. Its low dander, almost non-shedding coat needs frequent brushing to prevent matting, and makes a good choice for asthma sufferers. The various clips are a matter of taste for the average owner, but if exhibited at dog shows, the clipping rules are explicit, and must be strictly adhered to as per the Breed Standard.
We have two breeds of dogs,
Toy Poodles and Great
Pyrenees on our farm.
Our Toy Poodles are the best
family dogs. They do not shed,
eat very little, and provide
bundles of joy and laughter.
We do not breed our poodles,
both have been fixed.
Our Great Pyrenees are working dogs. We currently have two, who live with the goats. They are remarkable animals. Even when they were only 9 weeks old, they already knew their place was with the goats. Being brother and sister, we have had our male fixed. Our female will be bred once we acquire another male.
We feed a quality, high-protein dry food to our Pyrenees. Our poodles are fed boiled chicken along with their dry food.
History of Great Pyrenees:
It was in the isolation of the lonely mountain pastures that the Pyrenean Mountain Dog developed his inherent traits of devotion, fidelity, sense of guardianship, and intelligent understanding of mankind. Here, in the days when packs of wild animals roamed the mountain slopes freely, he was the official guardian of the flocks. With the dogs' ability to scent and keen sight he was an invaluable companion of the shepherd.
Great Pyrenees Characteristics:
Great Pyrenees males grow to between 110-120 pounds and 27-32 inches, while females reach between 80-90 pounds and 25-29 inches. They will live to between 10-12 years of age. Their coats are white and can have varying shades of gray, Red (rust) or tan around the face (including a full face mask), ears and sometimes on the body and tail; as a Great Pyrenees matures, their coats grow thicker and the longer colored hair of the coat often fades on those dogs that were not born completely white. Sometimes a little light tan or lemon will appear later in life around the ears and face. Being a double coated breed, the undercoat can also have color and the skin as well. The color of the nose and on the eye rims should be jet black. The rear leg bilateral double dewclaws are required.
